LAGOS EMPOWERS 50 RETIRED CIVIL SERVANTS WITH ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS

In furtherance of its commitment to the welfare of retirees, the Lagos State Government has embarked on another training programme to ensure the well-being and financial independence of persons who had served in various capacities as civil servants.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-day Skills Acquisition Programme for retirees, Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, said the quarterly training programme was in continuation of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to empowering retired civil servants.

Muri-Okunola, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Mr. Samson Ajibade, said various skills acquisition and other income-earning training sessions were offered to guarantee social and economic relief, reduction in emotional and physical stress as well as the eradication of poverty among retired officials of the State.

The Head of Service expressed confidence that the event was exciting, educative and interactive, congratulating the beneficiaries of the skills acquisition programme and encouraging them to practice all they had been taught in order to generate extra income and stay active in retirement.

Earlier in her address, the Director, Post Service Department, Mrs. Bukola Durodola, noted that the training and sensitisation programme was initiated to enhance the quality of life of the retirees after leaving the Lagos State Public Service.

She maintained that the training created an opportunity for the retirees to interact, just as it will make them independent in retirement.

Her words: “We ensured there is continuous training for all the retirees, which is good for their mental health and would reduce being lonely now that they are not engaged in any active work”.

One of the beneficiary retirees at the training session, Mrs. Olushola Adekola, appreciated the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his heart of benevolence and his commitment to the plight of the retirees.

Giving an assurance that the retirees will not take the opportunity provided by the Lagos State Government for granted, Mrs. Adekola stated that the training dwelt on issues that will make participants productive and useful for themselves while living a healthy life in retirement.

The participants were taught Auto-Gele, Packaging of Gift items and many more.
